- Baadi Mohamed Salem and Beibuh Hach are the most famous improvisers of the Sahara. They come from Smara, a small village of the desert. Their language is the hasani, dialect of the literary Arabic. Their nights are long lapses of time that they use to sing to the beauty of the desert, the events of the day, to the love and the life while they have a cup of tea. Their poetry has a brief weekly program in a radio station, offering to the listeners the verses that have brought them to the festivals of poetry of Algeria and Libya. The improvisation is a tradition in these villages, in spite of the fact that just a few stand out. The hasani is a dialect of the literary Arabic. It is the Saharan base to communicate the literature and culture, culture of oral tradition undoubtedly. That is the reason why poetry is something of great value for this people, since it is this art the one that is in use for preserving their history and their customs. In the western Sahara, the improvisation gets lost backwards in time. Once the night arrived, people get together and sing ancient poems to the sound of a drum. Once sung the known, the improvisers choose a metric or a topic and begin to improvise. Every metric has his melody accompanied on the guitar. They take part in several ceremonies, not only in that of the tea, but also they improvise in weddings, baptisms and other events. Every year there is a festival of poetry, but in these championships no one improvises, but there are just poems prepared for the occasion, provided that prepared things have always more force that the improvised ones. The m'ghani or improvisers are not in the habit of singing or reciting what they improvise; it is the Fanan or singer the manager who, after having whispered to his ear what he has to sing, expresses by his voice the idea of the improviser. It could happen that the singers improvise, but rarely one can see an improviser to sing. The poetry has always been the way of preservation of the Saharan culture, customs, values and wisdom. It has been a tool to arouse the people since 1973. The improvisation is not absent in the days of revolution. We can't forget the October 12, date indicated in the Saharan calendar in which there is celebrated the holiday of the united country.
