[EN] Some current orientations and the ecological perspective of languages. This paper covers themain points of a lecture entitled Euskaldungoaren egungo beharrak eta hizkuntza-ekologia(Current needs of Basquespeakers and language ecology) and delivered by Jon Sarasua during the summer course of the upV/ehu-university of the Basque Country organised in collaboration with the Sociolinguistics Cluster. It starts witha short definition of language ecology: language ecology is knowledge with ethics, an ethical view that leads toknowledge. From the starting point of a practical perspective, he dealt with the need to take a leap towardsknowledge about how diversity functions by developing ideas about ethical values and by establishing anattitude for preserving what exists. The aim is to know more in order to preserve more effectively. Furthermore,Sarasua puts the historical track record of the Basque community close to ecological ethics by linkingtogether the concepts continuityand openness: continuitydefined as the cultural instinct of human beings tocontinue what has been given, and opennessis specified as the attitude of being open at each moment. Ne-vertheless, he raises many ideas that the Basque community needs to take into account in favour of the sus-tainability of Basque, like the idea that being a Basque speaker nowadays calls for willingness or a specialeffort, and that in the coming generations there will also be a call for this. Finally, he says that qualitativeleaps will be needed to face the great challenge ahead, both in the areas of competences and on the strategylevel as well.
