Las pastorales gozan hoy en día de la consideración de Teatro Nacional Vasco. La modernización del género se debe a la sustitución de los temas
tradicionales ligados a la religión o a modelos identitarios franceses por temas relacionados con la identidad vasca. Esa evolución es clave para entender el éxito de estas representaciones. El artículo tiene por objetivo describir los cambios que se han producido desde los años cincuenta y prestar atención a Xahakoa, la pastoral que teatralizó Etxahun, la primera pastoral moderna, para perfilar la modernidad del género. El artículo concluye, entre otras ideas, que la posición central que ocupan en el canon vasco se debe no sólo a su excelente acogida por parte del público, sino al mantenimiento del verso y el estilo tradicional de enunciarlo.

The Pastoral is considered nowadays the Basque National Drama. The modernization of the genre is due to the substitution of the traditional issues, religious and French national identitarian models, by those relating to Basque identity. That evolution is the key to understanding the Basque pastorala’s success. The paper aims to explain the changes that have occurred since the fifties and to shape what a modern pastoral is, paying particular attention to Xahakoa, the pastoral which has theatricalized Etxahun, the first modern pastoral. The article concludes, among other ideas, that the central position of this kind of drama in the Basque canon is due not only to the audience’s warm reception but also to the maintenance of the traditional verse and the style of playing it.
