Improvised poetry or folk verse (trovo) has traditionally been understood as the struggle or dispute, in verse form, betwen two or more litigant singers, with the apparent intention, regardless of the theme, of defeating or outshining the opponent. Such a general definition is insufficient to the understanding in its concrete dimension of this kind of folk manifestation. Including the trouvères' disputes that take place in the Alpujarra (Granada, Spain). The author offers an approach to this question in four parts: a brief introduction familarizes us with Las Alpujarra, its lands and its people. Next, the intra-history of the folk verse in its origins is described: the mountain of the Contraviesa and its wine; peasants and miners: the folk verse «from Murcia» and the symbology of the old folk verse, the wail of profundity: the lyrical style. Third, it studies the importance of the arrival of workers from the Alpujarra to the Campo de Dalías (Almería) for folk verse. Day labourers become wealthy rural proprietors and folk verse is transformed to a narrative or epic style. Lastly, festivals and homages arise: there is a literary transition from the five-line stanza to the stanza of ten octosyllabic lines. The folk verse, or trovo, opens the way to satirical style.
