The Basques were the only people in Western Europe who survided the invasion of the Indo-Europeans. Their language, still spoken by thousands, is a relic of the past, having never been swallowed up by the Indo-European languages. As a prehistoric people, the Basques have a predominantly oral character. Especially noteworthy within this oral literature is the Basque troubadourism.

This artistic phenomenon can be def ined as the sung word of the people in which improvisation, above all, is the essential quality. The task requires a rapid, three-fold action: search, organization and performance. In Basque troubadourism composition and execution are simultaneous, with no preparation or pre-established formula intervening. The Basque troubadour is poet, singer and speaker combined. The central character in Basque troubadourism is the "bertsolari"; the second most importante entity is the audience.

In this dissertation I discuss the nature and history of this artistic phenomenon of Basque oral literature. It is divided into three parts: 1) analysis of the nature of the "bertsolarism", emphasizing its oral character, the definition of the "bertsolari" and the various manifestations of this artistic phenomenon; 2) history of the ''bertsolarism" selecting the most signif icant Basque troubadours since the early XIX century; 3) analysis of the work of four representative "bertsolariak" covering the geography and history of "bertsolarism" throughout Basque oral literature.
