BDB Bertsolaritzaren datu-basea

The dissertation consists of four sections.
The first section discusses issues of "Education Theory”. To summarise, it is shown that there are other types of training besides formal education and that school is characterised by historical and methodological features which influence the kind of knowledge that is imparted. I endeavoured to explain that the contradiction between oral and written media affects knowledge in accordance with studies of various cultures that were both innovative and little known at the time of writing.
The second section consists of interviews with traditional bertsolariak. Based on these testimonies, the conclusion reached was that they all, one way or another, learned verse composition.
The third section looks at the achievements of contemporary bertsolari schools, also analysing their teaching methods.
The fourth and last section presents conclusions, and in particular a comparison of the learning procedures of traditional bertsolariak and those with formal training. The latter is relevant to both individuals and the culture as a whole. While traditional bertsolariak process linguistic information "parellelly”, formally trained ones do so "serially”. The folk-style bertsolari "learns how to know”, while the new-style bertsolari must learn "what is known”.
This radical change was a manifestation of a transformation underway in Basque society which had already swept through the whole of the west: the displacement of oral by written culture. At the time, we were bearing witness to this process, and an attempt was made to express it through this Dissertation. On the present occasion, the result of that attempt is presented to you, the reader and only member of the jury.
